How to Overcome Emotional Eating

A Message from Noelyne...

How to Overcome Emotional Eating

Eating is a part of life.  Your body gets its nutrients from food.  Sometimes we can go overboard with our eating habits and it can result in gaining weight.  One issue with food is emotional eating.

The problem of emotional eating may end with the scale but it begins in the mind.  Stress takes its toll on your life.  When your defenses are compromised your health takes a hit and so do your emotions.

Everyone has good days and bad days.  How you deal with the bad ones brings emotional eating into play.  You look for comfort for your hurts.  People who turn to food for comfort find a coping mechanism that won’t judge them, hurt them or tell them “no.” To complicate the issue, eating pleasurable foods can stimulate the release of endorphins just like exercise.  So, after you eat, you feel better.

Emotional eaters use food to relieve stress.  They hide behind the food instead of seeking solutions to the problems.  This is not uncommon when the stressor is something horrible such as physical abuse or a death.

But, how do you know you are using food in this way?  The first sign is obvious.  You will gain weight if you eat too much.  In light of the weight gain, examine other areas of your life:

* Have you been under stress lately at work or at home?
* Has anything traumatic happened in the last year?
* Are you dealing with a problem but haven’t found a solution?

Answering “yes” to any of these questions could mean that you are an emotional eater.  You eat but you are not necessarily hungry at the time.  The foods that you choose are what we term “comfort foods”:

* High fat foods like French fries, fried foods
* High carb foods like macaroni and cheese, mashed potatoes
* Sugary foods like ice cream, donuts, cookies, cake

There is help for emotional eaters.  The first step is recognizing that you have a problem.  You’ll experience feelings of helplessness and guilt.  The guilt is over potentially ruining your health and the helplessness lies in the fact that you don’t see a way out.

Secondly, seek counseling.  There are many types of counselors out there that can meet your need.  Emotional eating has nothing to do with dieting or changing your eating habits but gaining control over your emotions.

A counselor might suggest things like visualization, practicing problem solving skills, relaxation techniques and family support.  Visualization helps you to see your problems in a realistic way and not blown out of proportion.  You will also learn to see food as nutrition for the body and not an emotional crutch.

Thirdly, your family can learn your triggers for stress and be on the lookout for changes in your eating habits.  They can help you be aware of the foods you are eating, assist you in making healthy food choices and exercise along with you.  Proper diet and exercise increases immunity, blood flow and positive thinking.  Yoga enhances the mind/body connection so you don’t eat when you aren’t hungry.

Finding new ways to solve your problems and deal with stress will push food out of the equation.  You’ll feel good about finding solutions which will replace the dependence on food.

10 Food Rules You Can Ignore

A Message from Noelyne..

There are actually diet rules out there that are meant to be broken.
10 Food Rules You Can Ignore:

1. Eating at night will pile on the pounds. The total calories you consume over a 24-hour period or over a week is what causes you to gain weight, and when you eat these calories doesn't matter.

2. It's best to eat at the same times every day. Eat when you're hungry, not when the clock says it's time to eat.

3. Dieting with a buddy always makes weight loss easier. Common goals may pay off but weight loss is a personal journey.

4. Dietary fat keeps you feeling full longer, so you'll eat less. Fat does take longer to digest, but it will not help you control your appetite. Foods likely to fight off hunger the longest are protein foods, followed by carbohydrates, then fats.

5. When you blow your diet, you might as well wait until the next day to get back on track. Nothing could be further from the truth- always try to get right back on track with your next meal.

6. Refusing food at a party or when visiting is rude. Turning down food that you know will blow your diet is socially acceptable.

7. Skipping a meal every now and then will help you lose. Skipping a meal means you will be so hungry at the next meal that you are likely to overeat. This can also  help lead to a slowdown of your metabolism.

8. Bread is fattening, nuts are fattening, pasta is fattening. Whole-wheat bread/pasta is a great source of nutrients, and it won't make you gain weight more than any other food with the same number of calories.

9. All calories are equal. This is somewhat true, however; you'll get more nutrients from a 100-calorie apple than from a 100-calorie portion of white bread. Choose healthier items if you are losing weight, or controlling your hunger.

10. If you don't clean your plate, you're wasting food. If you just don't feel right leaving the table until you've cleaned your plate, underestimate your hunger and put less food on your plate to begin with, or you may overeat.

Don’t believe everything you hear! Much of it is just superstition. Now you can tell your friends the real truth. In the end, nutrition experts say, many of the food and dieting rules we hold dear are meant to be broken - without guilt!

Enjoy your food,

Noelyne Jones

Fitness for Women- Stay Fit and Healthy!

A Message from Noelyne...

Fitness for Women- Stay Fit and Healthy!

Here are 10 tips for women to stay fit and healthy:

1.    Staying fit and healthy starts with a balanced diet. Know and monitor the right weight for your age. Learn what food you should avoid and follow your eating discipline routines.  If you are trying to lose some weight, foods with high calories should be omitted from your meals. Avoid foods high in sugars and saturated fats.  Eat the best quality food that you can afford and wherever possible prepare food yourself, avoid ready made or processed food as these are high in sugar and salt.

2.    Drink plenty of water. Drink at least eight glasses of water everyday, you can include herbal tea in this amount.  This cleanses the body from impurities. Increasing water intake keeps the body hydrated and your skin younger looking.

3.    The food on our tables today is not as rich in nutrients as it was years ago.  Intensive farming methods and increased use of pesticides reduce the quality of the soil and the product.  Take Vitamins and Supplements. For example, sufficient Calcium intake is beneficial for women of all ages. This has been proven to prevent having cramps and Pre-Menstrual Period (PMS) Symptoms. It also prevents Osteoporosis especially for menopausal women. Vitamin E boosts strong immune system. Women who are menopausal will benefit from taking Vitamin E as it eases night sweats and hot flashes. Also, Vitamin E is also great for the skin.

4.    Quit smoking. If you are smoking, stop. Also limit your alcohol intake.  Both of these have a detrimental effect on the body although moderate amounts of alcohol are good for you.

5.    Incorporate exercises in your daily routine. Take a walk after work, use stairs instead of elevator or play with your kids when you are at home. Home xercises are also effective especially when you do not have time to go to the gym and would like to stay healthy or lose some weight. Yoga and Pilates are only a few of the many effective exercises you can do at home. Exercises also help in limiting the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

6.    Avoid stress. Many women are prone to too much stress.  Most people have a certain amount of stress in their lives and that's good for you.  It's when the stress levels rise and get out of hand that the health problems start to occur. As much as possible take time to relax. Read a good book, spend time with friends and take some exercise or play a sport. Pamper yourself either a relaxing bath and facial at home or go to a Beauty salon or Day spa.  Do some shopping, retail therapy can be fantastic so long as you don't over spend and cause more stress. And do not forget to get enough sleep to revive your energy.

7.    Use sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.  Use a moisturiser with at least SPF 15.  Wear hats when under the sun to protect your skin. Too much sun is bad for your skin. The skin is prone to cancer when exposed to too much sunlight. It also speeds up the aging of skin cells, which causes wrinkles to women.  Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

8.    Make sure to visit your dentist to keep that beautiful smile. Always have it cleaned to prevent cavities and bad breath.  Use a good quality toothbrush and change it regularly.  Aloe Vera Tooth gel is great for keeping a healthy mouth, sparkling teeth and fresh breath all day long.

9.    Visit your Health clinic for a Smear test.  Women are encouraged to examine their breasts once puberty has been reached and should be a habit as they mature.  If you find any lump or abnormality then visit your GP straight away.

10.     Safe sex is strongly recommended. Use condoms to prevent sexually transmitted diseases.

Revitalise - How to boost your system and energy levels

The updated USDA food pyramid, published in 20...Image via Wikipedia

A message from Noelyne...

Give your system a bost every now and then by taking steps to revitalise your energy levels.  If you are very busy or have been unwell, it can leave you feeling sluggish and listless.  Taking time regularly to recharge will infuse you with vitality.  Here are some tips for revitalising yourself: some are quick fixes others will need more time and dedication.

  • Revitalising yourself through nourishing food - is the perfect place to start.  The food on our plates today is not as nutritious as it was 10 years ago.  Intensive farming, chemicals, supermarkets and the fast pace of life all contribute to poorer quality.  If you are fortunate to be able to buy farm fresh or even produce your own then you stand a better chance of having the right level of vitamins etc in your diet.

  • Think about the food you eat. Eating sugary foods will give you an instant high however, will ultimately make you feel slow and sluggish.  A detox can bring a new sense of vitality and regenerate your system.  Try spring cleaning your body by eating raw fruit and vegetables and unprocessed seeds, nuts and grains, which improve cellular functioning and increase stamina and energy.

  • Try a weekend detax or fast.
  • Use colour therapy to revitalise yourself.  Red, the colour of energy, can stimulate vitality and can also promote self-confidence, courage, stability, security, passion and physical activity.
  • Drink Aloe Vera Gel - This will increase your energy levels long term.  It works by improving the body's absorption of vitamins and minerals from teh food you eat and also is full of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and amino acid.  Make sure the drink is made from the inner leaf gel only.
Enjoy feeling energised again,
